The Saga from and around Kustrena
by Hilmar Frank © 1997 - 2013 by hfr@nk.de
Phule
The Saale still lies on the right bank between Kustrena and Gröna
small idyllic forest area. It is the Pfuhl bush. The name works
back to a legendary castle that stood here in ancient times.
She was hidden in thick woods. Shielded by the river meanders of the Saale
represented an almost impregnable bulwark
Surroundings of the castle, fed by the Saale floods and such a horror for everyone
Unfamiliar with the way, could have led to the coining of the name: the castle
im Pfuhl, in old spellings Poule, Pole, Pule, finally Phule.
For a long time only pitiful remnants of ramparts and ditches remind of the
former splendor of knightly systems. But the mysterious flair
of vanished epochs still seems to cling to it. the poet
Werner Bergengruen must when he sees a similarly desolate place
related ancestors so strongly that he read the verses
wrote (shortened):
Away in a lost direction shrouded black by pines I once came across
to a clearing desolate filled with undergrowth. Lamentation sleeps under the root
like in a dark shrine. One day he too will be the youngest of days
to be open. Which lament of the gloomy castle reverberate in the cesspool, may he
Provide retrospection in legend and history. Year of construction and builders are
unknown.
Only from 1162 do old documents name the lords of the castle. It was the nobles from
Struz (ostrich), lords on Phule. Your coat of arms shows the bird related to your name
Ostrich. The castle was also surrounded by a chapel with a bell on a turret.
The ostrich coat of arms of the Phule lords was also on the bell
embossed. The bell is said to be on the tower after the fall of the castle
Church to have come to Gröna.
After the Struze von Phule died out, the Knights of Alsleben came to the
possession of the castle. They are attested as lords of the castle on Phule until 1372.
Near the castle in a clear place in the bush there was also a
finch herd. The lords of the castle probably enjoyed themselves here as they once did
King Henry I at Vogelfang. The sound of bells and the sound of finches, which ones
Idyll seemed to surround the castle in the bush.
The last lord of the castle on Phule put an end to this. He became the
robber baron. With a band of unscrupulous fellows he held the area
Chess. The busy country roads from Magdeburg to Halle, from Halberstadt
to Halle were haunted again and again. The halls could do that too
Block thieves with little effort. The knight of Phule sowed no more,
he was only harvesting. Land and people in the wide vicinity of the castle groaned
under the endless tribulations of those on Phule. But they felt safe
in their nest of robbery and no power in the world seemed created to get them out of it
to evict.
Once upon a time, a girl of wondrous beauty fell into the hands of the Knight of Phule
Hands. It was the daughter of a merchant whose wagon train you see on the way
had plundered after Halle. The knight led the beauty to his castle
and hoped to make her his mistress. But she resisted. There
offered a runaway monk, the same thing with the robbers
made to brew a love potion. The girl was tempted to taste
and the potion worked. She seemed transformed and the
The lord of the castle experienced a love affair that captivated him above all else
and the world almost forgotten.
This was also felt by the man's previous lover on Phule. The beauty
Daughter of the Alsleben miller now waited in vain for the visits of the
knights Also the secret gate to the castle in the woods, whose access you well
was familiar, henceforth remained closed to them. She returned as if in a daze
home and swore bitter revenge.
Meanwhile, the girl's relatives found out that her
lovely offspring was still alive. They turned to the Count of
Plötzkau and asked him to mediate in the release for which they
offered a large ransom. Count von Plötzkau took care of the matter
and sent a request to the Knight of Phule.
Loud laughter rang out in the Knights' Hall at Phule Castle when the
Monk read out the count's message in front of the whole team. Of course, that
They would have taken money, but Burg Phule had never had a booty
reissued. Not at all this time, because the lord of the castle was tempted
love for the beautiful more than all the gold in the world.
He formulated the answer briefly and clearly: "Anyone who desires something from Phule
gotta get it!". Applause resounded through the halls of the castle again
and the rough fellows spun the cups. They made of the
message from their Lord a feast.
When Count von Plötzkau heard this answer, he felt deeply
injured in his knighthood. In quiet resentment he decided to build the robbery castle

When Count von Plötzkau heard this answer, he felt deeply
injured in his knighthood. In quiet resentment he decided to build the robbery castle
to destroy. For a long time he did not find the remedy, but he waited carefully
for better days They came when an icy winter swept across the land. At
a very early morning, when bitter frost hit the waters of the Saale and the
covered the morass in front of Phule with ice, the Count von Plötzkau set out with one
Crowd of armed men across the river. He took the miller's daughter out with him
Alsleben, who willingly took him along secret paths to the castle gate.
The Count and his men took the robbers castle by storm. The bad fellows on
Phule jerked awake and reached for their weapons. Those who could still fight,
fought back with grim determination, knowing full well that their
the last hour had struck. The Plötzkauer finally won with the advantage
of surprise. A court-martial was held immediately. All still
living robbers went to the gallows. The lord of the castle as a noble
was granted the right to die by the sword. He had to the end
fought like a lion, had sought death. But they wanted him alive
and finally managed to disarm him. Now the Count von Plötzkau stood
as victor before his enemy and pronounced the verdict: "Beheading by the
Sword". The lord of the castle looked up defiantly. His gaze wandered gloomily
around. The robber castle was already being destroyed, fire was already being set;
Flames and chaos everywhere. Then the Knight of Phule broke his proud silence:
The girl, where is she? "Save my love!" Count von Ploetzkau paled.
He quickly ordered the sentence to be carried out.The bloody events of the last
hours had made him lose sight of the real objective of the battle..
Nobody had bothered about the beautiful merchant's daughter.
Now Count von Plötzkau had them searched with all their might.
However the robbers castle in the bush at Phule ended in ruins and flames.
As the battle raged within the walls, the beautiful unhappy girl lost her mind.
Madly, she fled from the castle and ran down the course of the
Saale to the north. Eventually she sank exhausted to the ground and lost
her conscience. That's how the fisherman of the nunnery at St. Blasien near
Latdorf found her on the banks of the Saale. Filled with pity, he brought the
girl to the sisters. They nursed the stranger back to health.
