During the armistice with the Ungarns Heinrich I subdued various Slavic tribes in nowadays Brandenburg and forced them to pay taxes .

In order to be able to pay Heinrich I his taxes , subdued Slavic rulers invited people from the west to settle and to develop their sparcely populated lands.
